The Peruvian mountain (sierra)
The high plateaus or "Sierra" extend from the coastal rib up to 250 km inside the grounds in north and 400 km in the south. Average altitude is 3000 meters. It is primarily a high plateau cut out by steepsided valleys and dominated by one of the most impressive moutain chains in the world: the Andes.
It is an area whose seismic activity is intense and where the earthquakes are frequent. Although one finds traces of volcanic activity in the whole of the sierra, active volcanos are located only in his southern part.
In spite of a very broken relief with deep canyons, this part of the country hosts approximately 50% of the population. The climate is indeed more moderate there and precipitations allow a rudimentary agriculture. The principal culture is the potato. In high altitude one finds breedings of spangled and alpacas. Lastly, mining resources are exploited in many localities.
The dry season extends from April at October. The weather is hot and dry during the day, between 20 and 25°C, and cold and dry during the night with sometimes temperature close to 0°C. From November to April is the rain season. In general the morning is dry and released and it rains the afternoon. The temperature is a little lower (18°C) but the nights are hotter (15°C). Many microclimates create significant differences in climate according to the area.
